“She Who Holds the World”

She holds her hands as if she were afraid to let go. As if inside there were not simply a child, but a whole world that does not yet know where it is arriving.

The belly is round as a planet. Divided into planes, like a map no one has finished drawing.

At the centre — a dot. The place where a person begins. The place where memory begins. The first thread between two lives.

Perhaps this is what the world is like before the first breath enters it. Before a name appears. Before the story begins.

She does not yet know the face. But she is already holding a whole life.

And perhaps every mother during a war holds something larger than a child. She holds the future. And she holds it in both hands.
